A very difficult and painful component of growing and changing is gaining a proper handle on the direction of that growth and change. Likewise, and slightly more difficult, is the ability to – while directing the course of that change and growth – deal with the mistakes we have inevitably made and will make as we attempt to gain a handle on our lives. This takes courage. Courage to confront ourselves as we attempt to change and grow, and courage to determine what we need to do in order to become the selves that we are. What is more courageous than arguing our points or momentarily excelling in life, is confronting one’s own impulse to look away from the confusion that change creates and the persecuting thoughts associated with one’s own failures. Courage is taking responsibility for dealing with change and error.
