In regards to emotional intelligence (EI), what has been rising in popularity (within the business and sports sectors of our society) is the idea of EQ, which stands for "emotional quotient". EQ basically looks at the way people function and perform under duress, and EI complementarily, endeavors to help particular individuals appropriately assess their own emotional states (and the emotional states of others) in varying moments of their lived experience and adequately relate to external stimuli (persons, places, and things) in a way that is most fruitful for themselves and others.
It has been shown in a recent study done by Dr. Carl James, entitled "Towards Race Equity in Education" that 42% of Black students in the TDSB have been suspended 1 or more times from school, and the TDSB has revealed that racialized students tend to outnumber other students in behavioural classes. In light of this, encouraging EI seems most pertinent to positively impacting the educational outcomes of racialized youth in marginalized communities. We have seen in our program that many participants who have joined, but were volatile due to emotional distresses, have – through our programming – been placated and motivated to direct their energies towards becoming more productive members of society.
